BronxDocs is proud to add nephrology to our list of specialties! Nephrology is the study of kidneys, which are responsible for cleaning our blood and maintaining our body’s electrolyte balance. Patients will now be able to receive care for conditions such as kidney stones, blood in the urine, and chronic kidney disease (also known as CKD).
Our innovative early CKD detection program can help patients recognize chronic kidney disease in its earliest stage and understand how to prevent its progression and associated complications. This means fewer trips to the doctor and better health outcomes!
What’s CKD?
Chronic Kidney Disease, or CKD, is when the health of your kidneys gradually declines over time, causing them to filter your blood less effectively. This can lead to many additional health issues, including an increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease. With early detection, you can often keep CKD from getting worse and reduce your chances of kidney failure, which is fatal without proper treatment.
Although anyone can develop chronic kidney disease at any age, some people are more likely to develop it than others. You may be at increased risk for CKD if you:
- Have diabetes
- Have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension
- Have cardiovascular disease
- Have family history of kidney failure
- Are age 65 or older
- Belong to a cultural population with a high rate of diabetes or high blood pressure, such as African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian, Pacific Islanders, and American Indians
